About UPSC
The roots of Civil Services in India go back to the era of the East India Company, where civil servants were nominated and trained in England. In 1854, following Lord Macaulay’s recommendations, a merit-based Civil Service system was introduced. Competitive examinations began in 1855, initially conducted only in London.
The early system posed challenges for Indian candidates due to age limits and syllabus structure. Despite this, Shri Satyendranath Tagore became the first Indian to succeed in 1864. Over time, persistent demands led to reforms, and from 1922 onwards, Civil Services examinations started being held in India, marking a major milestone in administrative history.
